Kazakhstan to fight 'Borat' with 'Nomad'

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Kazakhstan is sending the film "Nomad" to U.S. theaters in an attempt to salvage damage done to the Asian nation's reputation by the comedy "Borat."

British comic Sascha Baron Cohen's satirical comedy, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," is set to hit theaters later this year.

Kazakhstan produced the $40 million "Nomad" in response to "Borat," The Times of London reported. Cohen has come up against the government before for his rude "Borat" character, who officials say portray the country in a bad light.

"We understand that 'Borat' is a kind of satire, but it is just a pity that Mr. Cohen chose Kazakhstan as the origin of his hero," Foreign Ministry spokesman Yerzhan Ashykbayevhe told The Times. "As far as I know, he has never been to Kazakhstan, although there have been efforts on the part of some people here to invite him so that he can see what our country is really like."
