Gibson offers apology in ABC interview

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- During an exclusive TV interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Mel Gibson apologized for his infamous drunk driving arrest in Malibu, Calif., last month.

In the interview, scheduled to air on "Good Morning America" Thursday and Friday, the "Lethal Weapon" star apologized and called his much-publicized anti-Semitic remarks "just the stupid rambling of a drunkard," ABCNews.com reported.

"What I need to do (is) to heal myself and to be assuring and allay the fears of others and to heal them if they had any heart wounds from something I may have said," said the 50-year-old actor. "So, this is the last thing I want to be is that kind of monster."

When asked about individuals he may have offended in his drunken outburst, Gibson was remorseful and said he would remain patient to regain the industry's trust, the Web site said.

"Well, hopefully ... in time they'll know," the "Braveheart" director said. "And, you're powerless over everything really. ... All you can do is take another step, keep breathing."
