Ayatollah Khameini slams pope's comments

TEHRAN, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Iran's top religious leader, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, said Monday Pope Benedict XVI's description of Islam was inaccurate.

Khamenei called the pope unjust for criticizing "the principle of Jihad" when he does not understand it, the Islamic Republic News Agency said.

"The first aspect of the pope's statement is the accusation he brought against Islam and the second aspect is that the pope has rushed to the aid of hegemonist powers to create religious conflict between Muslims and Christians," the ayatollah said.

In a speech at Germany's University of Regensburg last week, the pope quoted 15th-century Byzantine Emperor Manuel Paleologus -- born after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks -- who said Mohammed's contributions to religion were "truly evil and inhuman." The pope said later he does not agree with or endorse the emperor's words, which have set off a firestorm around the Muslim world.
