Copyright 2006 by United Press International (via ClariNet) NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A new book offers suggestions, including buying drugs from Canada, on how U.S. residents can meet the high cost of prescription medicine and health insurance. The biggest threat to a person's financial future may be the rising cost of healthcare and the inability to pay for it, Fred Brock told CBS. He said his book, "Health Care On Less than You Think," offers suggestions on how to lower healthcare costs, including: -- Pill splitting: Sometimes the stronger version of the pill is less expensive than a lower dosage, so people can save money by splitting the pill into the prescribed dosage. He said people should check with their doctors before splitting pills, which won't work in every instance. -- Buy drugs from Canada: Although illegal, Brock says authorities tend to look the other way. Brock said buying drugs from Canada can save up to 50 percent on one drug's cost, and can be done over the Internet. -- Negotiate hospital bills: For the uninsured, Brock suggested negotiating with the hospital to try lower the bill to what the insurance companies pay. -- Buy private health insurance: If there is no pre-existing condition, private individual policies can be cost-effective, Brock said.
