Akon pleads not guilty to fan-tossing

FISHKILL, N.Y., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. recording artist Akon has pleaded not guilty in an upstate New York court to endangering the welfare of a minor and harassment, authorities said.

The charges stem from an incident earlier this year when Akon allegedly picked up a teenage fan and tossed him from the stage into a crowd during a concert, TMZ.com said Monday.

The hip-hop artist was released on his own recognizance following a brief court appearance Monday and was told he does not have to be present at future court sessions because his lawyer can stand in for him, TMZ.com said.

Akon's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said in a written statement: "It was never Akon's intention to violate the law. This unfortunate incident was a spontaneous reaction during a live concert that Akon deeply regrets."

Akon's next court date is in January.
