'Jesus Camp' examines evangelical youth

DEVIL LAKE, N.D., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The provocative documentary "Jesus Camp," which focuses on a youth Bible camp in Devil Lake, N.D., is prompting a closer look at evangelical youth.

Some observers say the film, which features Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" camp, demonizes the evangelical youth movement, ABC said. Others embrace the film, including Fischer, who's helping to promote it.

The camp could be seen as representative of what observers say is a surge in the evangelical youth movement, the network reported Sunday. Over the past 15 years, enrollment at Christian colleges is up 70 percent. Sales of Christian music are up 300 percent. Tens of thousands of youth pastors have been trained.

There's disagreement about what this means and whether the movie accurately portrays the movement, ABC said. Supporters say the movement -- and the film -- help keep teens in the faith. Others say evangelical youth have an "us-vs.-them" mentality because they are inflexible in their views, particularly on abortion and gay rights.
