'Evan' on track to priciest comedy record

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Universal Picture's 2007 summer comedy "Evan Almighty" is racking up a record price tag that is no laughing matter for Hollywood.

The Los Angeles Times noted that the Steve Carrell picture will likely be the most-expensive comedy in history as its original $140 million budget heads as high as $175 million.

Unexpected costs for logistics and visual effects have added to the already high cost of filming with live animals, the Times said. Carrell plays a congressman called upon by God, played by Morgan Freeman, to make like Noah and billet scores of animals aboard an ark the size of a cruise ship.

The production is challenging other high budget, special-effects comedies such as "Men in Black," and "Wild, Wild West."

Universal calls "Evan" a sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey vehicle "Bruce Almighty" that should draw big numbers next summer.
