Pakistan has banned The Da Vinci Code from cinemas

Pakistan has banned 'The Da Vinci Code' from cinemas. Officials in the Islamic country stopped the screening of the movie - the big screen adaptation of Dan Brown's bestselling novel, starring Tom Hanks - after claiming it contained "blasphemous material about Jesus" and was "offensive to the country's minority Christian groups". The controversial film - which claims Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene and had a child - sparked nationwide protests in Pakistan. Leading politicians have also called for a worldwide ban on the movie. Pakistan's Culture Minister, Ghulam Jamal, said: "Islam teaches us to respect all prophets of Allah mighty, and degradation of any prophet is tantamount to defamation of the rest. "'The Da Vinci Code' is a sacrilegious act in the guise of freedom of expression and fiction. It has hurt the religious sentiments of Christians and Muslims throughout the world." Jamal also criticised the film's director Ron Howard, claiming he had "evil intentions" and had set out to "undermine the historical as well as theological truth about Jesus Christ."
