King Juan Carlos' troop visitSpain's King Juan Carlos made a surprise visit to Spanish troops in Afghanistan today (31.12.07). The king arrived at the Spanish base in Herat, western Afghanistan, at 6.30am this morning accompanied by Spain's Minister for Defence José Antonio Alonso and Chief of Defence Féliz Sanz. In a speech broadcast by radio to troops serving elsewhere in the country, the king said: "I only want to wish you all the best for the New Year and I'm sorry I can't greet you all.†The king spoke to Spanish commanders and greeted some of the 742 Spanish troops currently serving in the country as part of the International Safety Assistance Force (ISAF). He was due to stay at the base for lunch before returning to Spain later today.
