Drug dealer Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg has signed up to star as international drug dealer Jon Roberts in a new film.

'The Departed' star will be directed by 'The Kingdom' helmer Peter Berg's for the movie which will chronicle the life of the renowned criminal.

After returning from the Vietnam War in the 70s, Roberts travelled to Miami where he formed a relationship with the Medellin drug group and started distributing billions of dollars worth of cocaine. He was later turned in by a colleague, and spent 10 years in jail for his crimes.

Wahlberg will also produce the movie alongside Berg, Sarah Aubrey and Stephen Levinson.

He is currently filming Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel 'The Lovely Bones' with Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon.

This will be director Berg's first film following action hero comedy 'Hancock', starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron.
