Chest-baring criminal

A Malaysian singer has been sentenced to community service after angering officials by ripping off his shirt and baring his chest during a concert in Kuala Lumpur.

Faizal Tahir - who shot to fame in 2006 when he came second in a reality talent show - was performing live on Malaysian network 8TV when he took off his shirt to reveal a Superman logo painted on his chest.

The 29-year-old went against Malaysia's laws which state entertainers must cover up from chest to knee while on stage. Jumping, hugging, kissing and throwing objects at the audience are also illegal.

Faizal said: "I did not realise it would be an insult to many. I now realise that taking off one's shirt is a big no."

He will now serve community service at an orphanage or retirement home as an apology to the network, and will not appear on any of their programmes for six months.
