Brigitte Bardot is ashamed to be French

Brigitte Bardot is "ashamed" to be French. The iconic actress is furious with her country's opposition to a new proposal made by Sweden to the European Commission for improvements in living conditions for minks being bred in the Scandinavian country for their fur. Bardot, who runs a foundation for animal rights, has contacted the French Finance Ministry to criticise her compatriots for their stance. She wrote: "The intervention of my government makes me ashamed, ashamed to be French." The star feels so strongly about the plight of minks, whose pelts are widely used in the fur industry, she is considering relocating to Sweden permanently. She also encouraged Sweden to push ahead with its proposal to improve conditions for the "millions of unfortunate minks raised for their fur". Bardot has even written a letter to Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson praising his nation for being one of only a few countries "that takes into consideration animals' well-being". She is quoted by the New York Post newspaper as saying: "Perhaps I will leave France to finish my days in Sweden, since today, I feel much closer to Swedish sensitivity than to the French insensitivity."
