BRIT Awards nominees announced

(BANG) - Muse, Lilly Allen and Gnarls Barkley lead the nominations at this year's BRIT Awards.

The trio of acts are up for three accolades each. Muse have been named in the British Group, MasterCard British Album, for 'Blackholes and Revelations', and British Live Act categories.

Gnarls Barkley are up for International Group, International Breakthrough Act and International Album, for stunning debut St. Elsewhere.

Lilly - who took the music scene by storm in 2006 - has been put forward for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and will also compete with Muse for MasterCard British Album for her debut 'Alright Still'.

The singer has also been shortlisted for British Single. Out of the 11 songs that have qualified for the award, through radio airplay and record sales, five nominees will be decided by British commercial radio listeners who will vote on their favourite tracks.

Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, Justin Timberlake, the Scissor Sisters, Corinne Bailey Rae, James Morrison, Amy Winehouse, The Killers, and Bob Dylan have all been nominated for two awards each.

BPI Chairman Peter Jamieson insists the nominations clearly show what a great year for British music 2006 was.

He said: "Music is one of the things that the British do well. But even by our standards 2006 was a great year. The BRIT Awards with MasterCard 2007 will celebrate Britain's love of music with a fantastic mix of UK and international artists."

The nominations were announced at a lavish bash at London's Hammersmith Palais on Tuesday night (16.01.07) which featured sensational performances from James Morrison, The Fratellis and The Feeling.

During his band's performance, The Feeling frontman Dan Gillespie Sells almost launched himself into the crowd of pupils from the BRITs performing arts school - which is partly funded by the proceeds from the awards show - who were invited to the event.

The winners will be announced at London's Earls Court on February 14, with the show being broadcast live on television for the first time in almost 20 years.

Acts confirmed to play at the ceremony so far include Take That, Snow Patrol, the Scissor Sisters, The Killers, Amy Winehouse, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Corinne Bailey Rae.

Oasis, who are to receive the special Outstanding Contribution to Music award, will close the show with a performance of their classic hits.
