TORONTO, May 15 (UPI) -- Children of cartoonist Ben Wicks are in a Canadian courtroom this week trying to reclaim garbage bags full of his drawings left behind in a move.

The bags were discovered in a garage when Wicks' son, Vincent, moved from Keswick to Vancouver 15 years ago, The Toronto Star reported Tuesday. The cartoons were discovered by the new owners, who six years ago proposed publishing a book with the best material they found.

The Wicks family sued to recover the cartoons, valued in 2005 at nearly $58,000.

The new owners said they believe they own the drawings and the Wicks estate is the copyright holder.

Wicks, a syndicated cartoonist in Canada and the United States who died in 2000, saved everything, his children testified, including original drawings, unfinished drafts, newspaper and magazine clippings, paintings for animated films, and tapes of radio broadcasts and television appearances.

"My mother (Doreen Wicks) was distraught," daughter Susan McLelland told the Star, when she learned of the proposed book. Doreen Wicks died in 2004.

The Wicks children said they would donate the challenged cartoons to Ryerson University if they win. Their father donated material to the university in 1997 and had an agreement to deposit more.
