WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- The United States uses too much energy and the government should act to stem that trend, participants in a UPI-Zogby International poll said.

Some 8,182 U.S. residents took part in a June 15-18 Zogby interactive poll that focused on energy. There is a 1.1 percentage-point margin of error.

The majority -- 63.1 percent -- of respondents said the United States uses too much energy while 28.8 percent said the country uses the right amount and 2.6 percent said the country doesn't use enough energy.

Generally, the younger the respondent the more likely the respondent was to say there was too much energy use. Older participants, a majority of whom did say there was too much energy use, had a higher percentage of the "right amount of energy" responses.

Some 57 percent of those asked either strongly (29.5 percent) or somewhat (27.5 percent) agreed that the U.S. government should act to reduce energy use even if it means lifestyle changes. Some 25.8 percent strongly disagreed and 14.4 percent somewhat disagreed.
