UPI Poll: Solar tops alternative fuels

WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- Solar energy was the top choice of U.S. respondents in a UPI-Zogby International poll looking at most useful alternative energy sources.

Some 25.5 percent of those asked in a June 15-18 Zogby interactive poll selected solar when asked when type of alternative energy would be the most useful in the future. Second on the list was ethanol and biomass, which came in at 18.6 percent.

That reflects a change from January when the same question was polled and 26.7 percent said ethanol/biomass and 22.3 percent choose solar.

"Other" was third at 16.8 percent and "not sure" (16.3 percent), fourth in the June poll.

Wind as an energy source was named by 10.8 percent of respondents followed by hydroelectric (8.6 percent) and thermal (3.4 percent).

There were 8,182 U.S. residents who took part in the June polling, which had a margin of error of 1.1 percentage points.
