Copyright 2007 by United Press International (via ClariNet) WASHINGTON, April 24 (UPI) -- The United States and Japan plan a return to "more reasonable inspection standards" for imported U.S. beef, it was announced Tuesday. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said he had approved a plan for Japan to make additional audits of U.S. beef processing plants to insure their safety. Japan, in return, would stop insisting that all shipments must be inspected, he said. Johanns said he looked forward to "transitioning to more reasonable inspection standards for U.S. beef in Japan." He added in a release, "The United States expects Japan, as well as all of our trading partners, to implement import requirements for U.S. beef and beef products as soon as possible that are based on science and consistent with international guidelines."
