Thailand revokes ex-PM's diplomat passport

BANGKOK, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The ousted prime minister of Thailand has had his diplomatic passport revoked by the new military government and still cannot re-enter the country.

The BBC said Thaksin Shinawatra had his passport was canceled because of "the changing security situation."

Thai authorities have accused Thaksin's supporters of involvement in a series of New Year's Eve bombings in Bangkok, and the BBC said the government has ordered the media to stop reporting on statements made by his lawyers.

Thaksin has been out of Thailand since the bloodless September coup. However, the BBC said he remained an influential voice of opposition.

While he still holds a standard Thai passport, the loss of his diplomatic passport could slow down his travels.
