Survey: Most plan to buy generic drugs

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A poll has suggested that most U.S. citizens plan to buy generic drugs planned for sale at retail stores including Arkansas' Wal-Mart.

The Wall Street Journal Online/Harris Interactive poll of 2,493 adults found that 23 percent of respondents would "always" choose generic drugs over name brands and 28 percent would choose generic drugs "more often." An additional 17 percent said they would buy generics "somewhat more often." Nine percent said they would always choose name brands, and 10 percent said they would chose name brands "much more often," The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Of the respondents, 39 percent said they buy prescription drugs most often from chain drug stores including Walgreen and Eckerd, while 13 percent use discount stores including Wal-Mart, Target or Sam's Club. Eleven percent buy drugs online or by mail.

The poll follows announcements by Wal-Mart, Target and Kmart that they will soon begin carrying some generic drugs at lower prices. The survey indicates that the lower cost drugs will have an impact on the percentage of U.S. citizens buying drugs from the stores, the Journal said.
