Sixth body identified in bridge collapse

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A 48-year-old man was identified Thursday as the sixth fatality in the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

The body of Peter Hausmann, 47, of Rosemount, Minn., was recovered just before noon Thursday, The Minneapolis Star Tribune said.

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said tests were being performed on other human remains recovered Thursday by divers. He said the remains may be those of two other people.

The discovery of Hausmann's body brings the number of dead in the rush hour bridge collapse to six, and reduces to seven the number of those identified as missing.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday it is investigating a possible flaw in the design of steel connecting plates known as gussets, the newspaper said.

The NTSB said it was also looking into the weight of sand, gravel and construction vehicles on the bridge last Wednesday when the span fell into the Mississippi River.

The board has issued a nationwide alert to bridge engineers to "carefully consider the additional weight."
