Report debunks Diana conspiracy theories

LONDON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A British investigation into the death of Princess Diana concludes the Paris crash was caused by a drunken chauffeur who lost control of the car, a report says.

The report on a two-year investigation by a former head of the Metropolitan Police is to be released Thursday. But The Daily Telegraph reported Monday the report finds no merit in the conspiracy theories that have surfaced in the nine years since the princess and Dodi Fayed, son of Egyptian businessman Mohammed al-Fayed, were killed with their driver, Henri Paul.

Mohammed al-Fayed has contended that the British Secret Service arranged Diana's death because she was pregnant and she and his son planned to marry. The head of the investigation, John Stevens, found no evidence of pregnancy.

Stevens did conclude that Paul, although he was legally drunk and had also apparently taken tranquilizers, was not solely to blame for the crash. He found that pursuing photographers contributed.
