Proposed Bible park opposed in Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., June 10 (UPI) -- Residents of Tennessee's Rutherford County have come out in opposition of a proposal to create a Bible Park USA theme park within the county's borders.

Despite being a deeply religious community, residents have banded together to protect their region's natural beauty and openly oppose the creation of the spiritual park, The New York Times said Sunday.

"Would I rather look at the theme park or would I rather look at the farmland and the forest here?" Rutherford County pastor Bryan Brooks said. "I would pick the latter."

The project from the New York-based company SafeHarbor Holding chose the Tennessee county for its premium location.

The county is nearly 35 miles away from Nashville and is close to a major airport and highways.

While park developers contend the park would simply embrace biblical themes in a simple fashion, some opponents are concerned the locale would only cheapen the religious text.

The Times said that to help fight the park's creation, opponents have asked that its developers not be granted tax exemptions by the state.
