Police, reporters hurt in Thailand blast

BANGKOK, May 22 (UPI) -- Insurgents detonated a bomb in southern Thailand on Tuesday, injuring three police officers and three reporters investigating a brutal assault.

The attack came as the group traveled to investigate in Yala province, where a Buddhist villager was shot and set on fire by separatist Muslim rebels, the Bernama news agency reported.

"When the group arrived at the scene, a bomb exploded, hitting three policemen, reporters and photographers," Deputy Police Chief Narasak Chiangsuk told Bernama.

The injured included two local reporters and an Australian freelance photographer, Narasak said.

Yala and two other southern Muslim majority provinces have been wracked with insurgent separatist violence since January 2004. Officials estimate some 2,100 people have been killed by bombings, shootings and assaults.
