Niger releases reporters

NIAMEY, Niger, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Two French journalists arrested in Niger for interviewing Tuareg rebels reportedly have been released and are to return to France.

Thomas Dandois and Pierre Creisson from Arte TV were arrested last month and charged with undermining state security, which carries a possible death sentence, the BBC reported Saturday.

They were released Friday on bail with plans to return to France this weekend, the BCC reported, noting the Niger government's investigation of them would continue.

Prosecutors said Dandois and Creisson violated their accreditation agreement by filming the rebels after telling authorities they were in Niger to report on bird flu.

During the past year, at least 49 Niger soldiers have been killed in clashes with the rebels, who are seeking greater autonomy in uranium-rich northern Niger.
