London Olympic stadium plans revealed

LONDON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The 2012 Summer Olympics in London will feature a U.S.-style stadium with 80,000 seats, the architects of the facility said Wednesday.

Following the Games, the highest tier of seats will be removed from the facility, reducing it to a 25,000-seat community stadium, The Times of London reported Wednesday.

Construction on the stadium is scheduled to begin in April and finish six months before the start of the 2012 Olympics.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organizing Committee, said the facility will be a "stadium for a new era."

"It's a stadium that delivers on everything we said we would deliver on: a stadium with track and field as its primary legacy; a stadium that will be reduced from 80,000 seats in Olympic mode to a 25,000-seater community base," he said.
