Lawyer admits to steroid case file leak

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles say a defense lawyer has agreed to plead guilty to leaking secret court documents to two San Francisco Chronicle reporters.

The reporters, Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada, were jailed in September on contempt of court charges for refusing to name their sources for a series of articles and a 2006 book on the BALCO steroids case, "Game of Shadows," The New York Times reported Thursday.

However, lawyer Troy Ellerman has admitted to supplying the reporters with the transcripts of grand jury documents and agreed to plead guilty to two counts of contempt, one count of obstruction of justice and one count of filing false statements in a federal court, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

The deal will allow the reporters to go free.

"The government believes that Ellerman's guilty pleas alleviate the need for the reporters to testify," the statement read.

Prosecutors said Ellerman could receive up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
