Koreans fail to negotiate fishing zone

PANMUNJOM, South Korea, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Officials from North and South Korea failed to reach an agreement over a joint fishing zone in the waters off the western coast of the Korean peninsula.

Military officers from North and South Korea met in the demilitarized zone separating the two countries to develop a joint fishing zone in the disputed sea borders between the two countries, Voice of America said Friday.

North Korea disputes the United Nations demarcated sea border known as the Northern Limit Line, or NLL.

North Korean officials said the fishing zone should extend south of the NLL into South Korean waters, but South Korean officers said the zone should be along the NLL.

South Korean Colonel Moon Sung-mook said talks would continue, noting that negotiations produced a more efficient customs procedure allowing South Koreans to visit the North.
