Hopes dim further for missing miners

HUNTINGTON, Utah, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The bore hole being drilled into the Utah coal mine where six men were trapped by a collapse is likely to be the last.

The work continued Friday on the sixth hole, The Deseret Morning News reported, but officials with the Mine Safety and Health Administration would not say how far it had gone into the mountainside.

Five previous holes yielded no sign that the missing miners are still alive, and the rescue efforts have cost the lives of three men.

The families of the missing men said they were considering legal action to keep Robert Murray, the owner, from sealing the Crandall Canyon Mine.

"If our loved ones cannot be rescued, we'll accept no less than that they come home to us," said Sonny Olsen, a spokesman for the families.

Murray promised immediately after the Aug. 4 disaster that rescue efforts would continue until the men were found either alive or dead.
