OSLO, Norway, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- More than 30 sheep were left dead in Norway after a flock wandered in to the path of an oncoming train.

The mayhem occurred late Friday on the line between Alvdal and Tynset after the animals left their farm through a gate that had somehow swung open.

Aftenposten said Saturday that the farmer was on vacation and it was not clear how the supposedly locked gate was opened.

A total of 32 sheep were killed outright or had to be put down by veterinarians who responded to the scene.
