Edinburgh R.R. station to get green roof

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The main railway station in Edinburgh, Scotland, is to get a new roof with power-generating solar panels and a rainwater collection system.

The green roof is part of a planned refurbishment of Waverley Station in the Scottish capital to be carried out between 2009 and 2014, The Scotsman reports. Network Rail said the entire project is expected to cost $200 million.

"The investment would pay for itself by reducing water charges and power bills, and is relatively simple to introduce," said Ron McAulay, Network Rail director for Scotland.

The new roof will not change the appearance of the building, a listed landmark in the historic center of Edinburgh.

The present building, which replaced three earlier stations built by three railroad companies, dates from 1868. Waverley is the second largest station in Britain after Waterloo Station in London.
