Dems attack Bush child insurance veto

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Top Democratic House leaders Wednesday said President George Bush's comments on his veto of the child health insurance bill show he is out of touch.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the bill has broad support from Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

"His arguments against the bill have been debunked, to put it charitably, and many members of his own party have turned against him and vowed their support," Hoyer said in a statement following Bush's White House news conference.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed Hoyer's comments. "The children's health bill is supported by advocates for children, leading voices of the medical community, enjoys overwhelming bipartisan support, and is fully paid for," she said.

Hoyer said Democrats will continue to fight the president's veto.
