WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush has reiterated his plan to veto the State Children's Health Insurance Program bill, a White House spokeswoman said.

Bush spoke with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday, spokeswoman Dana Perino said during a news briefing.

"They had a conversation in which Speaker Pelosi asked the President not to veto the bill," Perino said. "But what he did say is that, I'm going to veto this bill and after that let's see if we can sit down and come to a compromise."

The children's health insurance package passed the Senate Thursday on a vote of 67 to 29, enough to override a veto. The House approved the legislation, 265 to 159, Tuesday not enough to overcome a veto.
