Buried Viking ship found in Norway

LARVIK, Norway, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Archaeologists discovered a Viking ship burial Tuesday on a farm in southern Norway.

The excavation was being carried out in preparation for the expansion of the graveyard at Hedrum Church in Larvik, Aftenposten reported. The researchers told Norwegian Broadcasting that another ship appears to be buried nearby.

Knut Paasche, who is in charge of the dig at Nordheim Farm, said that archaeologists cannot tell yet if the ship can be excavated intact. But he said that enough traces are left so that scientists can at least get a good idea of what the ship looked like.

The archaeologists said that while the find is an important one it is not comparable to the almost intact Viking ships now on display in a museum in Oslo.

Larvik is a port in Vestfold County at the southern tip of Norway.
