Bulgaria coal mine explosion kills 3 men

SOFIA, Bulgaria, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Three miners were killed and two others hurt Thursday when an explosion ripped the Dzhurkovo coal mine pit at the town of Laki, in southern Bulgaria.

The two injured miners were treated for gas poisoning in a Laki hospital and released later in the day, the Bulgarian news agency Focus said.

A team of experts investigated the cause of the blast; mine officials believed it could be a methane gas explosion.

However, a night shift manager of the Dzhurkovo pit said no gas was detected before the miners went down to work.
