The new Harry Potter book not only looks set to break sales records, it has also boosted sales of other fantasy books. With the release of JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the big wait for Potter fans is over. But the excitement is only growing.

With a mammoth number of copies already sold worldwide on its day of launch yesterday, bookstore owners can't get the glee off their faces. The magic of the boy wizard has only grown with the time, and India too has fallen under its spell. For a concept that was initially rejected by numerous publishers, it is interesting how Rowling's series has come to be regarded as a modern day epic in the eight years since the first book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) that was published in 1997.

Even children who were not much on reading are being initiated to the habit of reading with Harry Potter. Ever since Harry Potter started selling in India in 2000, it has been sold almost 1.5 lacks copies of each of the past five books. The series has taken fantasy story telling to new heights. No wonder, all the five previous books have notched number one spots in the bestsellers list in the UK, the US and several other countries.

The previous book, Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix (2003), is still to date the fastest selling book in history on its first weekend. The Half-Blood Prince looks well set to break that record. The impact of Harry Potter has already begun. The series is going to change the reading habits of younger generation. Almost 1,500,000 children will be reading the new Harry Potter book this weekend and that is brilliant.
