Russell Crowe

Russell Ira Crowe was born in Wellington, New Zealand on April 7, 1964. When he was four years-old, Crowe’s family moved to Australia, where his parents worked as film set caterers. Crowe was a child television star in Australia, hired to appear in “Spyforce,” for which his godfather was the producer. The Crowes moved back to New Zealand when Russell was 14, and during his second stay there he attended Auckland Grammar School, and became a rock musician under the stage name “Russ Le Roq.” Crowe returned to Australia when he was 21. After appearing in a few television shows, Crowe made his first movie debuts in 1990 with roles in “The Crossing” and “Blood Oath.” In 1992, he starred in “Romper Stomper,” which earned him the respect of Sharon Stone, who requested that he star with her in the 1995 Western film “The Quick and the Dead,” which was Crowe’s American movie debut. After that, he starred alongside Denzel Washington in “Virtuosity,” and then in 1997 he landed a role in the highly lauded “L.A. Confidential.” In 1999, Crowe co-starred with Al Pacino in “The Insider,” which earned him the first of his three Oscar nominations. He won the Best Actor in a Leading Role award at the 2000 Academy Awards for his role in the hit “Gladiator,” and was nominated again for his part in “A Beautiful Mind.” Crowe was the center of a FBI report that indicated that al-Qaeda was planning on kidnapping him, which led to Secret Service agents guarding him for the next few months on movie sets and at award shows. He has been known to have a combustible temper, and in June 2005 Crowe made headlines for throwing a telephone at a hotel employee in New York. Crowe also performed with a rock band called 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, singing lead vocals and playing guitar for the band, which disbanded after several disappointing album releases. He married Aussie singer and actress Danielle Spencer on April 7, 2003, which was his 39th birthday. The two met on the set of “The Crossing,” and now have two sons.
